Biography

June Kim is a system artist and director working between Los Angeles and Seoul. Her practice explores invisible structures of human connection through sculpture, installation, immersive media, AI systems, spatial experience, and cinematic storytelling.

For over a decade, Kim has developed an independent artistic practice centered around Redthread, an evolving system exploring how invisible connections shape human relationships, memory, culture, cities, and nature across physical and digital space.

Beginning in 2010 with her early Redthread sculptures and site-specific installations, Kim developed physical systems visualizing human networks through social media data, lines, knots, tension, and spatial relationships. Her prototype work, Knot: Landscape of Time (2010), became the conceptual and structural origin of the Redthread universe and later evolved into the foundational dataset and structural DNA of her AI-trained visual systems.

Following international recognition through a global art competition, Kim debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2012. She later participated in curator-led exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles connected to the Metropolitan Museum, Hammer Museum, and Craft Contemporary, where her early installations established a long-term exploration into connection, structure, emotional narrative, and immersive spatial storytelling.

Over more than a decade, Kim accumulated a large archive of physical works that gradually evolved into machine-trained visual languages and immersive media environments. Combined with her long-term background in time-based design and digital storytelling systems, her practice expanded beyond sculpture into immersive media art, AI-generated moving image, cinematic sequencing, and spatial narrative experiences bridging physical and digital realities.

Rather than treating AI simply as a tool for image generation, Kim approaches it as a human-centered system for extending memory, emotional structure, spatial rhythm, and storytelling across physical and digital space. Her work explores how visual systems can evolve into immersive narrative environments shaped through time, interaction, and machine intelligence.

During the pandemic in 2021, Kim began integrating physical and digital installation environments, expanding her sculptural systems into virtual and immersive spaces. From 2022 onward, she presented early AI solo exhibitions in Seoul and Los Angeles, evolving her installations into AI-generated natural environments and cinematic spatial experiences.

Her practice gradually evolved from sculpture and installation into AI-generated moving image, spatial media, and cinematic narrative systems. Today, Redthread functions not only as a visual motif, but as the underlying engine connecting her sculptures, installations, AI systems, immersive environments, and cinematic worlds across time. Through this evolving framework, Kim explores how art, technology, nature, culture, and human memory can be woven into new forms of storytelling and immersive experience.

In 2023, Kim presented one of the early AI art films at Saatchi Gallery in London and transformed Outernet London into an immersive public media experience. The same year, she presented AI-based public media artworks during Frieze Seoul, later expanded through Korean Blockchain Week alongside Christie’s.

In 2024, Kim presented a solo exhibition at NFT Paris and spoke on the Eiffel Tower stage about the convergence of physical art and artificial intelligence, exploring how emerging technologies can extend human storytelling and immersive experience.

In 2025, she was invited to the Paris AI Action Summit and exhibited 4 Seasons of Redthread Vision at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris as the only Korean artist presented within the exhibition supported by Meta France and Microsoft France.

Today, Kim continues weaving invisible structures of connection into cinematic storytelling and immersive worlds through a human-centered approach to AI, expanding Redthread beyond a visual system into a living narrative system for future storytelling.
